This program will assist in catching up students who are on lower reading levels with a primary focus on comprehension, phonics and vocabulary; Overcoming educational meet standards and ensuring measurement achievement to accomplish sustainability.
SOC Project 1 provides comprehensive early literacy programming for children age’s birth to fourteen that is focused and coordinated in five high-need neighborhoods surrounding Powder Springs-Cobb County School District elementary schools. The project achieves success for children through strategies that engage and empower families, support educators, and develop children’s emergent literacy skills.
SMV programs help to transform these locations—such as social service agencies, laundromats, grocery stores, parks, food banks, etc.—into early literacy classrooms where children experience the joy of books while developing pre-reading skills. Parents learn how they can make reading a fun and meaningful part of their children's lives, everyday, everywhere.
Clear-cut strategy instruction is at the core of good comprehension instruction. "In the Past" strategies activate students' prior knowledge and set a purpose for reading. "In the Mist" strategies help students make connections, monitor their understanding, generate questions, and stay focused. "After action" strategies provide students an opportunity to summarize, question, reflect, discuss, and respond to text.
Parents, placement parents, foster care and Teachers should help students to understand why a strategy is useful, how it is used, and when it is appropriate.
